Calicut Cooperative Society donates new bus to KSRTC

The Calicut City Service Cooperative Society has decided to purchase and donate a new bus to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to assist the agency amid financial challenges. The society utilized approximately 40 lakh rupees from its welfare fund for the purchase.

The proposed bus route will cover Kozhikode, Palakkad, Muthalamada, and Perambikulam. This initiative was prompted by the travel difficulties faced by residents and government employees in the Muthalamada area. The new service is also expected to improve access to Perambikulam, a major tourist destination in Kerala.

Kerala Transport Minister CP John welcomed the initiative, describing it as a model for how public participation can strengthen public sector institutions. The state government is currently considering a proposal that would allow other cooperative societies and local bodies to use their welfare funds to support KSRTC. This comes as the government aims to introduce 2,000 new buses to modernize the state's aging fleet.
