California 68th Assembly District features Democratic duel
In California’s 68th Assembly District, the November 3, 2026, general election will feature a contest between two Democratic candidates: David Penaloza and Jessie Lopez. Both current members of the Santa Ana City Council advanced from the June primary, having edged out Republican Mayra Ruiz and Democrat Shannon Wingfield.
Penaloza, who received 32.5% of the vote in the primary, is running as a pragmatic, pro-growth Democrat. His platform emphasizes public safety, infrastructure, and economic development, including support for increased housing production and additional police hiring. He has received the endorsement of incumbent Assemblyman Avelino Valencia.
Lopez, who received 31.4% of the vote, is described as one of Orange County’s more progressive officials. Her campaign focuses on renter protections, labor rights, immigrant advocacy, and environmental issues.
