California and New York sue Trump administration over offshore wind buyouts
Democratic attorneys general from California and New York, leading a coalition of seven other states, have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration. The legal action challenges federal agreements that would pay energy companies approximately $1.4 billion in taxpayer funds to cancel offshore wind leases.
One lawsuit, led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, targets the cancellation of an Invenergy project off the California coast. The administration has reportedly pledged nearly $4 billion nationwide to incentivize companies to abandon wind projects in favor of fossil fuels, natural gas, and geothermal energy.
A second lawsuit, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, involves agreements with Bluepoint Wind and Invenergy. These deals would redirect capital toward liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other conventional energy sources. The coalition argues these actions are illegal and will increase electricity costs by sabotaging the ability of states to meet rising energy demands.
The Department of the Interior has defended the buyouts as voluntary arrangements designed to support energy security, reliability, and affordability.
