California and Texas face scrutiny over noncitizen voter tracking

State officials in California and Texas are facing scrutiny regarding the tracking and prosecution of noncitizen voters.

In California, records requests revealed that the state’s voter registration system does not include a specific cancellation reason for non-citizenship. While the state cross-references new registrants against death records, felony records, and DMV address changes, it does not actively track citizenship status beyond a self-attested checkbox. Consequently, the Secretary of State’s office reported it cannot determine how many noncitizens have been removed from voter rolls.

In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton has led efforts to identify and prosecute noncitizens who allegedly voted illegally. However, reports indicate that despite ongoing investigations, only three individuals have been prosecuted. Some investigations have also targeted individuals who were subsequently found to be American citizens.
