California animal rescue founder indicted on 35 counts

Christine De Anda, 57, the founder of the “Rock ‘N’ Pawz” animal rescue, has been indicted on 35 felony and misdemeanor counts related to animal cruelty. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office alleges that De Anda maintained grossly inhumane conditions for approximately 300 animals, leading to widespread neglect and suffering.

Prosecutors claim the animals were left to suffer from starvation, dehydration, untreated injuries, and painful burns caused by urine and fecal matter in filthy environments. The charges include a dozen felony counts of animal cruelty and two felony counts of grand theft of labor, alongside 21 misdemeanor offenses such as operating an unlicensed kennel and failing to provide adequate care.

District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman characterized the case as a profound breach of trust, noting that De Anda allegedly failed in her fundamental responsibility to protect the animals entrusted to her sanctuary. Prosecutors have requested bail of $914,500 ahead of her upcoming arraignment at the Antelope Valley Courthouse.
