Danny Masterson rape conviction upheld by California appeals court

A California appeals court has upheld the rape convictions and prison sentence of actor Danny Masterson. In an 89-page ruling, a three-judge panel rejected arguments from Masterson’s defense that his 2023 trial was unfair.

Masterson, known for his role in ‘That ’70s Show’, was convicted of raping two women at his Hollywood Hills home in 2003. He was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. The appellate court dismissed claims that trial judge Charlaine F. Olmedo showed bias against the Church of Scientology, stating her conduct showed “no animus or departure from neutrality regarding Scientology.”

The court also rejected arguments concerning the statute of limitations and the admissibility of evidence regarding the Church of Scientology. Prosecutors had previously argued that the victims, who were members of the church at the time, delayed reporting the assaults due to fear of retaliation or violation of church rules.

Masterson’s attorneys have indicated they intend to seek a review from the California Supreme Court.
