California approves first state efficiency standards for replacement tires

The California Energy Commission (CEC) has unanimously approved a new regulatory program establishing minimum efficiency standards for replacement tires sold within the state. This marks the first state-level regulation of its kind in the United States, targeting the rolling resistance of tires for passenger vehicles and light trucks.

Projections suggest the measure could save drivers approximately $1 billion annually in fuel and electricity costs while reducing CO2 emissions by 2 million tons per year. To assist consumers, the regulation will implement a leaf-scale labeling system to indicate energy efficiency.

The rules are set to begin implementation in 2029, with even stricter requirements following in 2033. The CEC clarified that the measure does not prohibit aftermarket tires or require the immediate removal of existing ones; rather, it regulates the minimum efficiency levels of new replacement products available for purchase to prevent the loss of vehicle autonomy and fuel economy during tire changes.
