César Chávez sexual abuse allegations spark California academic overhaul

A New York Times investigation revealed that labor leader César Chávez had a pattern of sexually abusing women and girls in the United Farm Workers, including testimony from Dolores Huerta that he raped her twice. The report prompted immediate reactions across California.

State lawmakers renamed César Chávez Day to Farmworkers Day, and universities such as Fresno State and Cal State San Marcos covered or removed Chávez statues within two days. Over 130 public spaces nationwide and more than 65 streets, schools and parks in California bear his name, and his birthday has been a state holiday since 2000. In response, Bakersfield College professor Oliver Rosales swapped his planned reading on the Delano Grape Strike for the NYT investigation during a history class, while faculty statewide are reevaluating curricula and research on the farm‑worker movement.
