Diablo Canyon nuclear plant faces potential life extension to 2045

California is reconsidering its planned exit from nuclear power as the state grapples with energy reliability. The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently approved a license renewal for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, operated by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). While the plant was originally scheduled for decommissioning in 2025, state officials have extended its operation to 2030, and a growing coalition of nearly 50 groups is now advocating for a further extension to 2045.

Proponents, including labor unions and local chambers of commerce, argue the plant is a vital carbon-free bridge to a clean energy future, providing up to 9% of California’s electricity. However, opponents and environmental groups raise concerns regarding seismic risks, the management of nuclear waste, and the environmental impact of the plant’s cooling system. The plant utilizes a once-through cooling process that discharges massive amounts of warmer seawater back into the Pacific, which the California Coastal Commission estimates degrades approximately 14 square miles of nearshore habitat.
