California couple survives bear attack after French bulldog Cassie dies saving them

A French bulldog named Cassie died from her injuries after intervening to protect her owners during a bear attack in Trinity County, Northern California.

On the night of September 19, Jeff and Mallory Wilson were attacked by a cinnamon bear in their backyard. The encounter began when Jeff went outside to investigate Cassie’s barking. The bear knocked Jeff to the ground, causing two broken ribs and various bite and claw wounds. When Mallory went outside to assist, the bear also attacked her, resulting in serious injuries to her head, face, and hand.

During the struggle, the bear grabbed Cassie in its mouth. The couple managed to repel the animal by throwing a chair and a patio heater at it. Cassie was rushed to emergency veterinary surgery for deep cuts along her spine and multiple bite wounds. Although she initially showed signs of recovery, she passed away two days later.

California wildlife officers are investigating the incident. The owners believe the bear may have felt cornered between their house and a fence, leading to the unprovoked encounter.
