California couple charged with felony child abuse of 15 children
Guojun Xuan and Silvia Zhang, a couple residing in Arcadia, California, have been arrested and charged with felony child abuse involving at least 15 children. Prosecutors allege the couple used their luxury estate as a “house of horrors,” where they reportedly directed nannies to physically abuse children through beatings with sticks and shoes.
Many of the children were born through a surrogacy business operated by the couple. Investigators claim the couple provided false information to surrogate mothers to facilitate their large family. The criminal investigation was triggered in May 2025 after a two-month-old infant was hospitalized with a head injury that appeared inconsistent with the parents' explanation of a fall from a bed.
A nanny, Chunmei Li, has also been charged in connection with the abuse but has reportedly fled to China. During court proceedings, a judge set bail for Xuan and Zhang at $20 million each and ordered them to remain under house arrest with electronic monitoring. The defense has denied all allegations, claiming the couple is being unfairly targeted due to their nationality.
