California designates I-880 as first State Priority Safety Corridor

California has designated a stretch of Interstate 880 (I-880) between Union City and San Leandro in Alameda County as the first State Priority Safety Corridor (SPSC) in the San Francisco Bay Area. This initiative is part of a broader state road safety policy aimed at reducing serious and fatal traffic accidents through a data-driven, prevention-focused approach known as the ‘Safe System’ model.

The program involves collaboration between several state and local agencies, including Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The strategy integrates road design, operations, and targeted enforcement to address the root causes of crashes. The state has set an interim goal to reduce serious and fatal accidents by 30% by 2035, with a long-term vision of achieving zero traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2050.

Two additional corridors are expected to be announced later this year. The I-880 corridor is a critical route for commuters, freight operators, and local communities in the East Bay.
