California DOJ officer's gun found in Buchanan High School restroom

A firearm belonging to an off-duty officer with the California Department of Justice was found unattended in a restroom during a Buchanan High School football game at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The incident occurred during the school's season-opening game, which was attended by thousands of students, parents, and community members.

A student discovered the weapon inside a bathroom stall and remained outside the stall to prevent others from accessing it while friends notified law enforcement. Authorities secured the firearm, and no injuries were reported.

The Clovis Unified School District is working with the California Department of Justice to investigate the matter. The department issued a statement noting they are “committed to accountability and transparency” and are actively investigating the incident. The district is also reviewing policies regarding off-duty officers possessing service weapons while attending district events.
