California election officials outline key dates and signature verification processes
As California prepares for the November 3 general election, election officials have released critical information regarding voting timelines and the security measures used to verify mail-in ballots.
Ballot distribution began on October 5, allowing registered voters to receive their materials in advance. Voters can begin returning ballots on October 6 via mail, authorized drop boxes, or directly to county elections offices. This process covers federal, state, and local offices, as well as various state propositions.
To ensure election integrity, officials use specific protocols to verify signatures on mail-in ballot envelopes. In Los Angeles County, scanning devices compare ballot signatures against voter registration records, including driver’s licenses and prior affidavits. In Orange County, automatic software performs an initial review, while signatures that do not meet high-confidence thresholds are sent to trained staff for manual inspection. For a signature to be challenged, three election officials must agree that it is significantly different from the one on record, taking into account factors such as handwriting slant, letter characteristics, and potential health-related tremors.
