California EV rebates drive nearly 12,000 new vehicle purchases
California has reported that nearly 12,000 residents have purchased their first electric vehicle (EV) through the state’s new $270 million MyFirstEV rebate program. The initiative, funded equally by the state and participating automakers, offers $3,500 rebates for new EVs priced up to $50,000 and $1,750 for used models under $25,000. Notably, funding for Tesla models under this specific program has already been exhausted.
The state-level incentives arrive as a response to the removal of federal EV tax credits, which were eliminated following 2025 tax reforms. While overall EV sales have seen declines in California and across the United States, the state continues to lead in electrification efforts.
In addition to vehicle sales, Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted progress in charging infrastructure. California currently maintains 224,438 public or limited-access charging points, including 23,000 fast chargers. The state aims to expand this network to support a projected 6.8 million electric vehicles by 2030.
