California faces high wildfire risk from dry lightning and property exposure

California faces heightened wildfire risks due to an expected surge in dry lightning storms across the state and the Pacific Northwest. While 2026 has seen relatively low burned acreage compared to recent decades, experts warn that the peak of the fire season may not have arrived. Dry lightning, which produces minimal rainfall, remains a primary natural ignition source for wildland fires.

New data from Cotality highlights the massive economic exposure in the region, noting that California leads the nation in wildfire risk with over 1.28 million properties facing moderate or greater danger. The potential reconstruction cost value for these properties is estimated at $850 billion. Los Angeles is identified as the most exposed metropolitan area, with approximately 249,105 at-risk properties and a reconstruction value of $209.2 billion.

The analysis emphasizes the importance of mitigation, stating that well-prepared homes can experience 78% lower losses than average. Conversely, poorly prepared properties are roughly 47 times riskier than those with adequate fire-resistant measures.
