California faces multiple lawsuits from Trump administration

The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles to prevent California from counting approximately 20,000 ballots. The dispute arose after the Department of Justice (DOJ) provided a USB drive containing alleged information regarding non-citizen voters. Los Angeles County officials declined to access the device, citing cybersecurity and privacy protocols, while California Secretary of State Shirley Weber claimed the DOJ had not formally delivered the list to her office.

In a separate legal action, California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed the state's 100th lawsuit against the federal government since 2025. This lawsuit targets U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), alleging the agency is unconstitutionally detaining individuals within state courts. The state claims that despite a judicial order to cease such actions, ICE detained 34 people in June 2026 and 28 people in July 2026. California officials argue these arrests create a deterrent effect that prevents witnesses and victims from participating in the justice system.
