California faces potentially wet, snowy winter due to El Niño
California may experience an active winter season due to the combination of a strengthening El Niño and a developing positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The El Niño event is characterized by unusually warm water in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, which can shift atmospheric circulation and strengthen the Pacific jet stream, directing more moisture toward the western United States.
The positive IOD, which involves warmer waters in the western Indian Ocean and cooler waters near Indonesia, may further influence weather patterns by sending atmospheric waves into the jet stream. This interaction could affect storm tracks, moisture flow, and the movement of cold air, potentially leading to a wetter and snowier winter for the state.
