California families pursue accountability in fatal crash lawsuits

A civil wrongful‑death trial began on July 22 in San Mateo County Superior Court over a 2022 illegal street‑race crash in Redwood City that killed Gregory Ammen and Grace Spiridon, parents of twin girls. The lawsuit targets the two convicted racers – Cesar Morales, sentenced to home monitoring, and the estate of Kyle Harrison, who died in jail after an overdose. The victims’ sister, Liza Spiridon, said, “Our focus has always been these children,” emphasizing the family’s drive for accountability.

In Marin County, parents of the four teenage girls killed in an April 2025 crash on San Geronimo Valley Road are split on whether the 17‑year‑old driver should face trial. The driver faces four misdemeanor vehicular‑manslaughter counts, while some parents push for diversion and others demand a full trial, citing concerns over road conditions and evidence. Linda Kepley argued, “I’m not satisfied that speeding alone was the cause of this accident,” and Gail Koren added, “She would want every lead pursued.” The families have also filed separate lawsuits alleging hazardous road conditions contributed to the crash.
