California fig season continues with new Emerald variety
California’s fig season continues into the fall season with a variety of fresh, locally grown options. Melissa’s Produce is highlighting an assortment that includes Black Mission, Heirloom, and Emerald varieties.
The Emerald fig is noted as a new addition to the California crop. It features smooth yellow-green skin and a golden interior with a sweet flavor and honey notes, similar to the Calimyrna fig.
Retailers can offer these varieties in various packaging, including full tray packs, family packs, cardboard pints, and smaller weight options. The fruit is marketed for use in both sweet and savory dishes, such as salads, desserts, or paired with cheeses and charcuterie.
