California fuel prices surge as diesel hits display limits

California is experiencing extreme fuel costs, with diesel prices in some areas exceeding $9.00 per gallon. Some gas stations have reportedly reached the $9.999 limit of their digital pump displays due to these high prices. As of mid-September 2026, regular gasoline in California averages between $5.89 and $5.97 per gallon, significantly higher than the U.S. average of approximately $4.30.

Several factors contribute to California’s high prices, including state taxes, climate regulations, a unique fuel blend requirement, and a diminished refining system. Additionally, global oil market volatility has impacted the state. While the U.S. is a major oil producer, it remains a net importer of crude oil, and domestic prices are heavily influenced by international crude benchmarks.

Nationwide, diesel prices have reached record highs. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the U.S. average for diesel hit $5.87 per gallon. In California, regulators have launched investigations into extreme pricing at individual stations in the San Bernardino and Los Angeles areas.
