California Gov. Gavin Newsom attacks Donald Trump in Fourth of July address

California Governor Gavin Newsom used his Independence Day speech to focus almost entirely on President Donald Trump. In the eight‑minute remarks he claimed Trump is afraid of the upcoming November midterm elections, accused him of adding more than $4 billion to his personal fortune while in public office, and said Trump “doesn’t care about you, doesn’t care about America, and barely cares about his own party.”

Newsom also linked Trump’s actions after the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol riot to the deployment of the National Guard in California, criticized the U.S. Supreme Court for not restraining the Trump administration, and compared the fight against Trump to historic movements such as women’s suffrage and civil‑rights struggles. The governor, who is himself under a Department of Justice investigation, positioned the speech as part of a national branding effort ahead of a possible presidential run.
