California Governor declares emergencies for wildfires and storm recovery

California Governor Gavin Newsom has activated a statewide emergency response to address dangerous fire weather and coordinate recovery efforts following Tropical Storm Rachel. The Governor proclaimed states of emergency in Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties to assist with storm recovery, including flooding, coastal erosion, and roadway disruptions. Additionally, emergency declarations were issued for Tuolumne County due to the Dove Fire and Calaveras County to accelerate cleanup from the Gann Fire.

In South Orange County, the Norte Fire has burned approximately 570 acres and damaged or destroyed six homes. To combat the blaze, Newsom secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA, which provides for 75 percent reimbursement of eligible suppression costs.

In the Imperial and Coachella Valleys, the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) declared a local state of emergency after Tropical Storm Rachel damaged electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure. The storm caused significant flooding and canal breaches, affecting over 2,300 electricity customers. IID officials stated the declaration allows for accelerated repairs and resource mobilization to restore critical infrastructure.
