Gavin Newsom says Trump used immigration raid for political attack
Federal court documents and internal Homeland Security texts released in 2026 show that the immigration enforcement operation carried out on August 14, 2025 outside Governor Gavin Newsom’s press conference in Los Angeles was motivated by politics rather than public‑safety concerns. A Homeland Security Investigations agent testified that the raid was “purely political” and lacked a legitimate operational basis. The documents also reveal that agents were pulled from other duties, such as Home Depot patrols, to stage the operation and that the timing was chosen to draw media attention to the governor’s event.
Governor Newsom publicly accused the Trump administration of weaponizing immigration enforcement against him, calling the raid “a maneuver orchestrated for political purposes” and an “abuse of power.” The governor’s office cited the same internal messages, which describe the operation as a “political agenda” and a “media stunt.” The case remains pending in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
