California Governor Gavin Newsom faces criticism over housing law reforms

State officials in Sacramento have proposed changes to California's housing regulations, prompting criticism that the reforms will undermine the traditional American dream of single‑family homes with yards and stable neighborhoods. Analysts note that a number of suburban and rural cities—including Chico, Clovis, Dublin, Irvine, Manteca, Menifee and Roseville—have attracted significant population growth, offering affordable homes, strong schools and family‑oriented amenities.

Critics argue that while these boomtowns are governed by moderate to center‑right councils, larger urban centers such as Los Angeles, governed by a more progressive council, continue to struggle with high costs, homelessness, traffic congestion and taxes, leading many residents to relocate to the faster‑growing suburbs.
