California Governor Gavin Newsom faces scrutiny over new policies
California Governor Gavin Newsom has overseen several recent policy developments that have drawn scrutiny regarding their impact on religious freedom and corporate influence.
Under Assembly Bill 1803, authored by Assemblyman Josh Lowenthal, employers with five or more employees are now required to provide training on hate speech. The law targets speech that “vilifies, humiliates, or incites hatred” against protected characteristics, including religion, gender identity, and reproductive health decision-making. Critics have raised concerns regarding the lack of a clear legal definition for hate speech and how the mandate applies to religious organizations.
Additionally, Newsom has faced criticism regarding his stance on billionaire taxation and corporate mergers. He opposed a ballot initiative that would have imposed a one-time 5 percent tax on the assets of California billionaires. Furthermore, Newsom has been linked to the decision by Attorney General Rob Bonta and other officials to drop opposition to Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, following negotiations involving David Ellison. While Newsom defended these actions as protecting state jobs and revenue, critics argue they favor wealthy interests.
