The selective release has drawn sharp criticism from Republican officials and media groups, who say the process falls short of Newsom’s pledge of full transparency. U.S. Rep. Kevin Kiley and State Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher called the approach a “pick‑and‑choose” tactic. The California Post, which had repeatedly urged a full public disclosure, was not invited. The filings, according to notes taken by the attending journalists, show the Newsoms paid nearly $200,000 in taxes, and the governor is also facing a possible FBI corruption investigation involving both him and his wife.
