California Governor Newsom launches EV rebate program
California Governor Gavin Newsom has introduced the "MyFirstEV" rebate program, offering $3,500 discounts for first-time buyers of new electric vehicles (under $50,000) or $1,750 for used models. The initiative utilizes $135.5 million in state taxpayer funds, supplemented by matching funds from automakers including Tesla, Hyundai, and Lucid.
This program aims to support Newsom's 2020 executive order to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035. During a press conference in Oakland, Newsom defended the mandate despite recent polling from the Public Policy Institute of California showing that 66% of adults and 65% of likely voters oppose the ban. Notably, the opposition includes approximately half of the state's Democrats.
Critics argue the subsidies are narrow in scope, primarily benefiting a specific segment of buyers while failing to address broader economic issues such as housing affordability and infrastructure. Additionally, some observers note that major automakers have recently scaled back EV production, contrasting with the state's push for increased adoption.
