California Governor Newsom welcomes new CAL FIRE leaders

CAL FIRE leadership academy company officers emergency response firefighters

Governor Gavin Newsom welcomed 39 newly graduated CAL FIRE company officers during the department’s 12th leadership academy of 2026. The graduation took place in Sacramento on September 11.

These new officers join more than 3,600 CAL FIRE emergency response leaders trained since 2019, following state investments in frontline leadership and crew development. Fire Chief and Director Joe Tyler stated that the graduates are prepared to protect California communities with courage and integrity, embodying the dedication to service central to the department.
