California gubernatorial race pits Becerra against Hilton
California is preparing for a gubernatorial election featuring a contest between Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton. The race highlights two distinct visions for the state's future, with voters expressing significant concern over the cost of living, including housing, gasoline, and food prices.
According to a Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) poll from September, Becerra holds a substantial lead with 60% support compared to Hilton's 38%. However, the election occurs amidst widespread dissatisfaction; 54% of respondents believe California is on the wrong track, and 71% anticipate difficult economic times. Becerra's platform focuses on state intervention to manage costs and expand healthcare and housing access, while Hilton advocates for tax reductions, deregulation, and stricter immigration and security policies.
Hilton, a former political advisor in the United Kingdom, is attempting to break a long-standing Democratic stronghold in the state, as no Republican has held the governorship since 2011. His campaign centers on addressing what he describes as the chaos, poverty, and insecurity caused by current state policies.
