California health officials warn of measles exposure via Amtrak travel
California health officials have issued an urgent warning following a measles exposure involving an unvaccinated passenger who traveled via Amtrak trains and connecting thruway buses. The individual, who was subsequently hospitalized, traversed multiple transit hubs across at least six California counties: Alameda, Butte, Kern, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Joaquin.
The passenger arrived in Los Angeles from Chicago on September 10. The itinerary included stops in Bakersfield, Stockton, Oroville, Sacramento, and Emeryville, before the traveler eventually departed for Denver. Authorities have warned that anyone who was aboard the same trains or buses, or present at the stations during the specified travel windows, may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus.
This incident occurs amid a significant measles resurgence in the United States. State officials, including Assistant State Public Health Officer Dr. Rita Nguyen, are emphasizing the importance of the MMR vaccine to prevent severe complications such as permanent brain damage or death, particularly in young children.
