California High-Speed Rail Authority debuts at InnoTrans 2026

The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has announced its debut with a dedicated stand at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin. This move marks a shift from passive participation to proactive engagement, aiming to showcase infrastructure ambitions, innovative procurement, and attract international manufacturers and investors to the project.

However, the project faces significant scrutiny regarding its management and costs. Originally approved by voters in 2008 with a $33 billion estimate, current cost projections have risen to between $126 billion and $231 billion. While a section between Bakersfield and Merced is under development with an estimated 2031 operational date, no high-speed tracks have been laid yet.

A report from the Office of Inspector General (OIG) has identified approximately $680,000 in questionable reimbursements for project consultants. The OIG noted expenditures for “unallowable” travel to locations including nightclubs, cigar lounges, and gyms, raising concerns over how taxpayer funds are being utilized as the project's scope and budget continue to evolve.
