California high-speed rail project faces critical funding shortage
California’s high-speed rail project is facing a severe funding crisis, with officials warning that the megaproject could run out of cash as early as the end of 2027. The estimated cost of the project has escalated significantly, with reports citing figures ranging from $126 billion to $231 billion.
Benjamin Belnap, the Inspector General of the California High-Speed Rail Authority, issued a warning to Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislative leaders regarding a significant funding gap expected over the next five fiscal years. To maintain construction on the initial Merced-to-Bakersfield segment, the project requires an immediate $2.2 billion in additional financing for the 2027–28 fiscal year alone.
The project has also incurred over $5.7 billion in fees related to delays and change orders. Completion of the rail line is now estimated to be delayed until approximately 2039.
