California housing market highlighted by luxury home price comparison

A comparison between two luxury real estate listings has highlighted the extreme price disparities in the California housing market. An estate in Toddville, Iowa, priced at $10.2 million, features over 13,000 square feet of living space, a 15-acre lake, and Italian villa-inspired landscaping.

In contrast, a $9.9 million property in Carpinteria, located in Santa Barbara County, California, offers only 2,135 square feet of space. While the California home is significantly smaller, its value is driven by locational advantages, including direct beach access and views of the harbor and islands.

Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com, noted that the comparison exemplifies the mantra of “location, location, location.” She stated that the narrow price gap between such vastly different properties demonstrates how “disconnected from the rest of the US California home prices are.”
