California housing market shows high costs and low affordability

California's housing market continues to present significant challenges for buyers. According to the California Association of Realtors, only 19% of households could afford a median-priced, existing single-family home during the third quarter. The minimum qualifying annual household income required to purchase a median-priced home reached $228,000, an increase of $4,400 compared to the previous year.

In Los Angeles County, a report from Realtor.com indicates that median advertised rents fell 3.6% year over year to $2,554. While rents for units with two or fewer bedrooms dropped 3.8%, the cost of purchasing a home remains substantially higher than renting. The modeled monthly cost of buying in Los Angeles County was $7,270, which is $4,716 more than the median asking rent.
