California implements AI surveillance and new fire safety rules

California is implementing new technological and regulatory measures to combat the increasing threat of wildfires. To improve early detection, the ALERTCalifornia program, a collaboration between UC San Diego and state agencies like CAL FIRE, utilizes a network of over 1,200 high-definition cameras. These cameras use artificial intelligence to analyze images for smoke and potential fire starts, providing real-time data to emergency responders.

Simultaneously, the state Board of Forestry and Fire Protection has issued new safety mandates for homeowners in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. These rules focus on ‘Zone Zero’—the five-foot area immediately surrounding a home. Residents in these high-risk areas must clear combustible materials such as mulch, firewood, and dry leaves from this zone to prevent wind-driven embers from igniting structures. Additional requirements include maintaining clearance between trees and roofs or chimneys and keeping gutters free of debris.
