California job growth driven by health care sector

California added 39,400 payroll jobs in August, accounting for approximately 24% of the total national job gain. While the state's unemployment rate stands at 5.1%, which is its lowest since December 2023, the growth is heavily concentrated in specific sectors. Private education and health services led the expansion, adding 18,600 jobs in August and 131,500 over the past year.

Conversely, several sectors have experienced declines. Year-over-year, the information sector lost 22,600 jobs, while professional and business services, financial activities, manufacturing, and construction also saw job losses. In August, professional and business services recorded the state's largest monthly loss, centered on legal, accounting, and computer-related fields.

The economic picture remains complex. While California leads the nation in August job creation, its 5.1% unemployment rate is higher than the national average of 4.1%. Additionally, data indicates a decline in the labor force, with the number of people looking for work decreasing significantly compared to the previous year.
