California K-12 test scores show modest gains in math and English

California K-12 student test scores showed modest improvements across math, English, and science in the latest state assessment report. Math proficiency rose to 38.5%, English language arts reached 49.3%, and science scores increased to 36%. While progress continues, officials noted that the pace of improvement has slowed compared to the post-pandemic surge.

Other notable trends include a 10-year high in graduation rates and a decline in chronic absenteeism, which fell to 18%. Suspension rates have also reached their lowest levels since 2019, excluding the pandemic period. However, statewide school enrollment has declined to 5.7 million students, a loss of 74,000 from the previous year, which may impact district revenues.

In specific regions, Fresno Unified reported improved performance in English and math, marking the first time the district has exceeded pre-COVID proficiency levels. The Golden Plains Unified School District also reported a 6% increase in math proficiency over the last year.
