California launches $2.7 billion transportation and climate resilience plan

Governor Gavin Newsom has launched a new phase of a plan to overhaul California’s transportation system to address climate threats. The initiative allocates $2.7 billion toward more than 150 projects, integrating zero-emission infrastructure and climate resilience into the state's broader strategy.

The funding aims to reduce travel times, expand alternatives to car travel, and reinforce assets vulnerable to extreme weather. Key projects include $267 million for structural and electrical renovations at three of the four Caldecott Tunnel bores in Orinda. In Shasta County, $76.5 million will fund wildlife crossings and pavement improvements on Interstate 5, while $33.5 million is designated for projects near State Route 1 in Humboldt County to improve fish passage and reduce sediment.

Additionally, the package includes $2.45 million for infrastructure and security upgrades at four Los Angeles stations ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In Sonoma County, $63 million will be used for State Route 37 to add high-occupancy vehicle lanes between Sears Point and Mare Island.
