Monique Limón faces setback as California Assembly rejects wildfire cost deal

California Senate President Pro Tem Monique Limón faced a legislative setback when the State Assembly rejected a major compromise regarding wildfire cost distribution. The proposed plan, negotiated between Limón, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, and Governor Gavin Newsom, aimed to address rising wildfire expenses by protecting survivors and holding utility companies accountable for fires caused by their equipment.

The deal collapsed during a final-hour caucus meeting following intense lobbying from utility and electrical workers. While the Senate maintained it had sufficient votes to pass the measure, Assembly Speaker Rivas stated the agreement failed to provide the “relief, accountability or meaningful reform that Californians deserve.”

Despite the failed deal, Limón has established a leadership style focused on consensus-building and empowering her caucus, contrasting with the micromanagement of her predecessor. Her tenure has been marked by efforts to maintain party unity through a collaborative approach rather than a top-down structure.
