California GOP and journalist protest new privacy law

Republican lawmakers, activists, and independent journalist Nick Shirley held a rally at the California State Capitol to protest Assembly Bill 2624, which was recently signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. Opponents have nicknamed the legislation the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act,’ arguing it infringes upon First Amendment rights and freedom of the press.

Officially known as the Safe at Work Act, AB 2624 aims to protect the personal identifiable information of immigration service providers to prevent harassment and doxxing. The law makes it illegal to post such information online for the purpose of inciting violence and allows providers to seek damages in court. Supporters, including the bill's author Assemblywoman Mia Bonta, state the measure is necessary to protect workers from extremist rhetoric and threats.

Critics, including State Senator Tony Strickland, contend the law uses vague language that could be used to shield organizations from scrutiny and prevent journalists from investigating potential fraud. Legal advocates have indicated they are prepared to challenge the constitutionality of the law in court.
