California lawmakers approve fast-track bill for San Diego sports arena

California lawmakers have approved Senate Bill 344, a measure designed to fast-track the Midway Rising development project in San Diego. The project includes a 25-story professional sports arena, 4,250 housing units, and approximately 15 acres of public parks.

If signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the law will allow developers to use an existing environmental review to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This legislative move is intended to shield the development from potential environmental lawsuits that have previously hindered redevelopment efforts in the Midway District.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has championed the redevelopment of the sports arena as a key priority for the city. The proposed 165-foot-tall structure significantly exceeds the existing 30-foot building height cap for the neighborhood.
