California lawmakers propose lowering GLP-1 drug costs
California lawmakers are advancing Senate Bill 1089 to address the high cost and limited accessibility of GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Authored by State Senator Laura Richardson, the bill aims to expand access by directing the state to partner with drug manufacturers to increase competition and lower prices through the existing CalRx program.
The CalRx program, which already distributes naloxone, albuterol inhalers, and a $55 insulin option, would likely require several years to implement a GLP-1 partnership. The current version of the bill is a modified version of an earlier proposal that sought to mandate coverage for GLP-1 drugs through CalPERS. CalPERS opposed that original requirement, arguing that the high cost of the drugs would result in a $28 monthly premium increase for its 1.3 million members.
