California leaders condemn Trump remarks regarding potential Iranian strikes

During a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, President Donald Trump suggested that Iran could ‘take out’ major U.S. cities, specifically mentioning Los Angeles and San Diego. Trump stated that the costs associated with ongoing conflicts were ‘a small price to pay’ and remarked, ‘Let ’em take out Los Angeles. Let ’em take out San Diego.’

California officials responded with swift condemnation. Governor Gavin Newsom described the remarks as ‘deranged and dangerous,’ noting that they appeared to advocate for an attack on over 10 million residents. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass argued the comments could compromise city safety, while San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria rejected the idea that his residents should be treated as ‘collateral damage.’

The White House attempted to reframe the comments, stating the President was highlighting the broader threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran. While California’s State Threat Assessment Center and emergency management officials began monitoring for potential security or cyber threats following the remarks, no independent evidence or intelligence has confirmed an imminent Iranian capability to strike the U.S. West Coast.
