California leads US in cryptocurrency ownership
According to the 2026 State of Crypto Holders Report by the National Cryptocurrency Association, the United States has over 67 million cryptocurrency holders. California leads the nation with an estimated 9.5 million holders, which is nearly double the amount found in Texas, the second-highest state with 5.94 million holders.
Other states with significant cryptocurrency ownership include Florida (4.71 million), New York (4.66 million), Illinois (2.64 million), Georgia (2.45 million), and Pennsylvania (2.36 million). Outside of these primary hubs, cryptocurrency ownership tends to correlate with general state population numbers.
As of August 2026, Bitcoin remains the largest cryptocurrency, with a supply of over 20 million tokens valued at more than $1.2 trillion. Data from CoinMarketCap indicates that more than 56 million different cryptocurrencies exist globally.
