California leads U.S. innovation rankings by state

An analysis by SmartAsset has ranked the 50 U.S. states based on innovation activity, utilizing a composite score of three per capita metrics: patents issued, research and development (R&D) expenditures, and venture capital (VC) deal value.

California holds the top rank, driven by high patent production and nearly $5,000 in venture capital per capita. A group of six Western states, termed the ‘Innovation Belt’, includes California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho, all of which placed in the top 10.

Different states demonstrate unique strengths within the rankings. Massachusetts leads in R&D spending per capita, while Delaware and Wyoming are driven primarily by venture capital. Washington shows a combination of high patent activity and significant research spending. Notably, Idaho reached the top 10 through substantial R&D spending, including over $600 million via the Idaho National Laboratory, despite relatively low venture capital attraction.
