California police incidents leave officer injured and suspect dead

Two separate violent incidents involving police and armed suspects occurred in California.

In San Jose, a police officer was critically injured during a shootout with an armed robbery suspect. The confrontation began after officers spotted a suspect linked to two robberies driving an SUV. After a brief pursuit, the suspect fled on foot and entered a residence near Goodyear Street and Lick Avenue. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, an officer was wounded and transported to Valley Medical Center in critical condition.

In San Diego, a five-hour standoff near the Loma Portal area ended with the death of a residential robbery suspect. Officers responded to a welfare check that escalated into a report of an ongoing residential robbery. After a SWAT team was deployed and negotiations were attempted, the suspect emerged from the home holding a firearm, prompting police to open fire. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene, and the San Diego Police Department has initiated an internal administrative review.
