California police increase enforcement of e-bike and electric vehicle laws

Law enforcement agencies in California are increasing focus on the regulation of electric mobility devices, such as e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric motorcycles, as the new school year begins.

In Folsom, police have conducted targeted operations this summer, resulting in 48 rider contacts and 14 citations. Officers have also towed several illegally operated electric motorcycles. The Folsom Police Department emphasized that while these devices are popular among youth, they are subject to different legal classifications under California law. Sacramento County Regional Parks has also issued safety reminders to parents and students regarding where these vehicles can be legally operated.

Similarly, the Eureka Police Department reported a rise in calls related to the reckless operation of electric-powered devices. To address safety concerns for pedestrians and motorists, the department is launching a social media educational series to clarify California’s laws regarding vehicle classifications, helmet requirements, and licensing.
