California promotes Pat McCann to offensive play-caller
California head coach Tosh Lupoi has appointed passing game coordinator Pat McCann as the new offensive play-caller. The decision follows an mid-game coaching change during the Golden Bears' 39-31 loss to UNLV.
During the second half of the game against the Rebels, Lupoi stripped offensive coordinator Jordan Somerville of play-calling duties and promoted McCann. The move resulted in a significant offensive surge, with Cal scoring 24 points in the second half—their highest scoring output in a single half against FBS competition this season. This production occurred while backup quarterback Jackson Brousseau played the entire second half following a concussion to Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
McCann, who previously served as the offensive coordinator for Fresno State in 2023, will lead the offensive strategy starting with Cal's upcoming game against Virginia Tech. While the team had previously utilized a pro-style offense under Somerville, the second-half performance under McCann more closely resembled a spread offense.
