California ranks as most energy-efficient U.S. state

A WalletHub analysis has identified the most and least energy-efficient states in the U.S., excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The report highlights that heating and cooling costs typically account for more than half of the average American household's $2,000 annual utility expenditure.

California ranked as the most energy-efficient state overall, noted for having the lowest residential energy consumption per capita and high auto efficiency due to robust public transit. Vermont secured second place, driven by strong vehicle fuel economy and home energy efficiency. New York placed third, maintaining low per-capita home energy consumption despite harsh winters and having the lowest annual driving miles per person.

Other high-performing states include Washington, Massachusetts, Oregon, Colorado, Utah, Minnesota, and Nevada. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests that implementing energy-efficient home measures could reduce utility expenses by up to 25%.
